Residence Permit for Researchers – Finland

Hassle-free visa processing for your travel needs.

Overview

A residence permit for researchers is required for individuals coming to Finland to conduct research, study for a licentiate degree, or prepare a doctoral dissertation.

If you are a citizen of an EU Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland, you do not need a residence permit but must register your right of residence.

Eligibility

You may apply for this permit if:

  • You hold a master’s degree (second-cycle degree) or a bachelor’s degree (first-cycle degree).
  • You have signed an agreement on research activity (hosting agreement) with a research organisation in Finland.

You may be granted either:

  • A residence permit for research under the EU Directive, which allows mobility across the EU for research purposes.
  • A national residence permit for research, which allows research only in Finland.

If your employer holds employer certification, you can apply for a D visa alongside your residence permit, allowing immediate travel to Finland upon approval.
