Overview

If you wish to join your spouse or family member in Finland, you must apply for a residence permit based on family ties.

Your family member in Finland is referred to as a sponsor, but they cannot apply on your behalf—you must submit the application yourself.

Who Qualifies as a Family Member?

In Finland, family members eligible for a residence permit include:

  • Spouse (married or registered partner).
  • Cohabiting partner (must have lived together for at least two years or share joint custody of a child).
  • Guardian of a child under 18 years.
  • Child under 18 years.

dating partner is not considered a family member under Finnish law but may apply for a residence permit on other grounds.

If you are an EU citizen, you do not need a residence permit but must register your right of residence.

Eligibility

You may apply for a residence permit based on family ties if:

  • Your spouse or family member has a valid residence permit in Finland.
  • You are married or in a registered partnership (certificate required).
  • You meet the income requirement (if applicable).

If your spouse is applying for a Fast-Track residence permit, you can apply at the same time to get your permit in two weeks.

Documents Required

Visa Application Form

  • duly completed, dated, and signed residence permit application form.

Passport

  • valid passport issued within the last 10 years.
  • Must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay.
  • Must contain at least two blank pages.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Proof of Family Ties

  • Marriage certificate (must be legalised if issued outside the Nordic countries or EU).
  • Certificate of registered partnership (if applicable, must be legalised).
  • Proof of cohabitation (if applying as an unmarried partner).
  • Divorce or death certificate (if you or your spouse was previously married).

Proof of Sponsor’s Residence in Finland

  • Copy of your sponsor’s residence permit and passport (all pages with stamps/notes).

Proof of Finance

  • Bank statements (last 6 months) of your sponsor from all Finnish bank accounts.
  • Latest tax card, tax return, and tax decision of your sponsor.
  • Employment contract of your sponsor (if applicable).
  • If self-employed, business income statement, tax details, and financial documents.

Proof of Accommodation

  • Rental agreement or home ownership documents of your sponsor in Finland.

Proof of Travel

  • Flight reservation or travel itinerary.

Health Insurance

  • valid private health insurance policy covering medical and pharmaceutical expenses for the entire stay in Finland.
  • Minimum coverage of €30,000.

Application Process

  1. Submit Your Application
    • Apply online via Enter Finland or through a paper application.
    • If applying online, visit a Finnish mission to verify identity and provide biometrics.
  2. Pay the Application Fee
    • Payment is made online or at the Finnish mission during identity verification.
  3. Identity Verification
    • Visit a Finnish embassy or consulate to prove your identity and submit original documents.
  4. Decision Notification
    • Applicants receive updates via email or SMS.
    • If granted a residence permit, a residence permit card will be issued.

Right to Work & Study

  • If granted a residence permit based on family tiesyou can work and study freely in Finland.
  • If applying based on a dating relationship, work rights may be restricted.

Photo Specifications

Ensure your visa application photograph meets the following requirements:

  • Recent & Quality: Taken within the last six months, high resolution, no marks or creases.
  • Size & Composition35–40mm width, face covering 70–80% of the frame, sharp and clear.
  • Expression & Eyes: Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes fully visible, no hair over the face.
  • Lighting & Background: Even lighting, no shadows, plain light-colored background.
  • Headwear & Glasses: Head coverings allowed only for religious reasons, glasses must not obstruct eyes.
  • Digital Standards: High-resolution, photo-quality print.

Avoid blurry images, red-eye effects, obstructed features, or overexposure. Non-compliant photos may result in delays or rejection.
